Recently, I was assigned both writing and photography for two very different stories in local magazines. It’s a unique challenge to capture both visual and written aspects of a story. For instance, you don’t want to simply transcribe the photos for the copy, but it’s interesting to look for details that may be hard to describe. Likewise, when I’m interviewing a subject, I always hope that our conversation leads to a fascinating experience or intimate quote that, of course, can’t be captured in an image. And then there’s the issue of bias: I try to always take a step back and ask myself, what am I missing here? What are my assumptions?
I don’t necessarily want to do both writing and photography for every assignment, but I do enjoy the creative challenge!
This was a delightful assignment and I want to be adopted by the Schneiders! “All we need is the pixie dust,” in the fall issue of Central Virginia Home magazine. Click here to read the online version.
